RYA Day Skipper Course<\/p>\n

RYA Day Skipper is a hands-on course that is highly recommended for anyone who regularly sails on board a yacht. It\u2019s designed to improve skills and build knowledge of all aspects of life at sea whilst skippering a sailing yacht during short passages.<\/em><\/em><\/h4>\n

This is a demanding course for skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills.<\/p>\n

You will spend 6 days navigating and sailing your way across the Danish South Sea or in the Kattegat, including some night sailing. Under the watchful eye of your instructor, you\u2019ll practice your skippering skills, ensuring your crew are safe and happy. You will plan and put into practice a variety of different passages, including the execution of pilotage plans skills in to (and out of!) busy fjords, anchorages and marinas. Other key skills include interpreting weather forecasts, engine maintenance, sail handling and sail trim.Armed with your RYA Skipper qualification, you will boost your confidence to take charge of a sailing yacht and explore beautiful harbours and anchorages. You can also charter a sailing yacht during a holiday at home or abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Knowledge of being on board a sail yacht to Competent Crew level. We also strongly recommend that you do the Day Skipper theory beforehand or an equivalent certificate. This course enables you to put chartwork knowledge into practice rather than learning everything whilst afloat.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Syllabus Day Skipper:<\/strong> The course teaches pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling up to the required standard to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in waters with which the student is familiar. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn to start making decisions onboard. A comprehensive introduction to seamanship, basic navigation, pilotage, safety procedures and Collision Regulations for use in local waters.           <\/p>\n<\/h4>\n

1. Preparation for sea <\/p>\n

    \n
  • Is able to prepare a yacht for sea, including engine checks, selection of sails, securing and stowage of all gear on deck and below <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    2. Deck Work <\/p>\n

      \n
    • Can reef, shake out reefs and change sails to suit prevailing conditions <\/li>\n
    • Can prepare an anchor, mooring warps and take charge on deck when mooring alongside, coming to a buoy, anchoring, weighing anchor and slipping from a buoy or alongside berth <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      3. Navigation <\/p>\n

        \n
      • Is proficient in chartwork and routine navigational duties on passage including: Taking and plotting visual fixes Use of electronic navigation equipment for position fixing <\/li>\n
      • Use of waypoints <\/li>\n
      • Working up to DR and EP <\/li>\n
      • Estimating tidal heights and tidal streams <\/li>\n
      • Working out course to steer to allow for tidal stream, leeway and drift <\/li>\n
      • Knowledge of IALA buoyage <\/li>\n
      • Maintenance of navigational records <\/li>\n
      • Use of echo sounder and lead line <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        4. Pilotage <\/p>\n

          \n
        • Can prepare and execute a pilotage plan for entry into, or departure from, harbour <\/li>\n
        • Understands the use of leading and clearing lines <\/li>\n
        • Use of transits and surroundings as aids to pilotage <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          5. Meteorology <\/p>\n

            \n
          • Knows sources of forecast information <\/li>\n
          • Can interpret shipping forecasts and use a barometer as a forecasting aid <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            6. Rule of the road <\/p>\n

              \n
            • Has a working knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              7. Maintenance and repair work <\/p>\n

                \n
              • Understands and is able to carry out maintenance tasks <\/li>\n
              • Knows the properties and uses of common synthetic fibre ropes <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                8. Engines <\/p>\n

                  \n
                • Knows how to change fuel and water filters, pump impeller and to bleed the fuel system <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  9. Victualling <\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • Understands how to victual a yacht <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    10. Emergency situations <\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • Is able to take correct action as skipper for recovery of man overboard <\/li>\n
                    • Understands distress flares and how to use a liferaft <\/li>\n
                    • Can operate a radiotelephone in an emergency and send a distress message <\/li>\n
                    • Understands how to secure a tow <\/li>\n
                    • Understands rescue procedures including helicopter rescue <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      11. Yacht handling under power <\/p>\n

                      • Can bring a boat safely to and from an alongside berth, mooring buoy and anchor under various conditions of wind and tide <\/li>\n
                      • Can steer and trim sails effectively on all points of sailing <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        12. Passage making <\/p>\n

                        • Can plan and make a coastal passage, taking account of relevant navigational hazards and limitations imposed by the type of boat and the strength of the crew <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                          13. Night cruising <\/p>\n

                          • Has experienced sail cruising at night, including leaving and entering harbour. <\/li>\n
                          • Understands the special consideration for pilotage plans, keeping a lookout and identifying marks by night. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
